In many parts of Africa, poultry farming is a common practice, and chickens are raised for both meat and egg production. They are often more accessible and affordable sources of protein compared to larger livestock such as cattle or pigs. Additionally, chickens require less space and resources to raise, making them a practical option for small-scale farmers and households with limited resources.
Eggs, in particular, are highly nutritious, containing a good balance of essential amino acids, healthy fats, vitamins (such as vitamin A, B vitamins, and vitamin D), and minerals (such as iron and zinc). Chicken meat also provides a significant amount of protein along with essential nutrients.
A group of graduates from the FMM schools have started a chicken coop with funding from L2H. This will gave them supplemental income in addition to improving the community’s food security.
